Family history, somehow
About QUFC
What began as siblings making terrifying faces at one another eventually acquired rules, prizes, a website, and far too much institutional confidence.
Before quarantine.
It is difficult to trace the exact origin of the Ugly Face Contest—and perhaps even harder to explain why the faces began in the first place. When Kyle was young, his older brother Daniel would make frightening faces at him. They were memorable enough to produce nightmares.
Over the years, the Martin family kept making ridiculous faces at one another. It became a creative outlet and, occasionally, a convenient method for siblings to torment each other.
Then one Christmas Eve, Nicole had the idea to turn the unregulated game into a proper competition. Everyone submitted one entry, everyone voted, and the winning face earned a place on an ornament for the Christmas tree.
About the word “ugly.”
The competition is about deliberately creating ridiculous, funny, or frightening expressions. It is not a judgment of anyone's normal appearance. Everyone shown in the archive is participating in the joke.
Make a terrible face. Have a great time.
