Standards of excellence

Rules & Rubric

A high-quality ugly face is not an accident. It is a discipline.

The five rules.

Rule 01

No Photoshop.

No editing your entry into something your face did not actually do. Filters are permitted, but keep them minimal.

Rule 02

No artificial props.

No hats, wigs, face paint, novelty glasses, or other equipment. Regular glasses are fine if you normally wear them.

Rule 03

You get three votes.

Spread the votes among different people or place all three on one magnificent disaster.

Rule 04

No voting for yourself.

History will judge your face. You may not.

Rule 05

Keep your ballot secret.

Don't discuss your choices until voting ends. If there is a tie, tied entries face a revote.

Judging criteria

The sacred four.

Realism

Is it a classic ugly face, a nightmare, or ideally a disturbing combination of the two? When in doubt, lean abstract.

Creativity

Show us something we could not have imagined. Overdoing it is not merely permitted; it is encouraged.

Humor

The face that gets the biggest laugh usually does well. Shocking is useful. Funny is essential.

Pure Ugliness

Repulsive. Unpleasant. Almost inhuman. This is where mirror practice and trial-and-error earn their keep.

Training advisory: you may discover face and neck muscles you did not know existed. Don't hurt yourself for the trophy. The QUFC medical department does not exist.
